Olympic Party Extravaganza

Take one games-mad kid and one party mad mama. All this adds up to a pretty good formula for a fun-filled occasion otherwise known as a Kid's Olympic Party Extravaganza.

This was a reasonably straight forward party to plan, other than having to make the five different batches of coloured cupcakes of course. But I'd planned ahead and made the cupcakes last weekend, and only had to worry about the icing yesterday.

You could of course have coloured the cupcakes themselves too, but I drew the line at coloured cases and icing as that in itself took enough time.

The flag bunting was simple enough to create from paper templates glued onto cardboard and held together with string, whilst the Olympic torches were made from rolled up cardboard, wrapped in gold wrapping paper with red and yellow cellophane cut out to look like fire to go in the middle.

Olympic torch popcorn added to the theme - microwave popcorn popped inside ice-cream cones.

And Olympic ring jars painted in the colours of the Games and filled with co-ordinated tasty coloured sweets.

The themed plates were standard heavy duty cardboard plates with an Olympic ring template glued in the middle, and the drinks were a pack brought from the supermarket where I'd just removed the labels and replaced with our very own Olympic-ade labels, perfect for giving our guests a mid-party sugar pick-me-up.

Our teams arrived ready for action - we'd chosen Great Britain - the host of the last games in 2012 and Brazil - the host of the next Olympic Games in 2016.

We kicked off our Olympic Games with the Javelin throw. The kids did a great job throwing with all their might.

And surprising us with how far they could actually get.

Next up was target shooting at the rifle range.

Where a steady hand and straight aim guaranteed the biggest points.

Next up: the hoop relay.

The hoops gave the kids a good run for their money for a while on the slippery court.

They won in the end though.

Then it was time for a hearty balloon stomp.

 Ready, set, go!

The balloons also proved quite tricky to pop, easily sliding out from under foot on the shiny court.

The best plan of attack proved to be holding one's foot on the balloon gradually with more and more weight.

Inside each balloon were points to be gathered - 1, 2 or 5 points. The little chap below somehow managed to score 25 points and beat the rest of the crew in this game!

Then it was kai (food) time. Burger rings and Stripes ringed biscuits accompanying our Olympic theme, and the country flags in the club sandwiches proving a good discussion point over dinner time.

Although it never fails to surprise me how very little kids end up eating at parties. They are always having way too much fun talking and generally mucking about to be seriously interested in gobbling up the food!

Then it was time to sing our guest of honour Happy Birthday.

And the candles went out in one big puff!

Then it was back into the games. The kids loved Ping Pong Pitch (although you might know it as Beer Pong if you're an adult), but rest assured there was only water in these glasses and no sculling was required.

The last game saw the teams battle it out to match up the flags with the countries in the quickest time and they all did it surprisingly fast.

Then it was time to add up the team points: Brazil took out the Silver Medal winning position and Great Britain the Gold Medal place. In the next picture, Noah looks like he is howling in tears but he is in fact cracking up at his dad's resounding rendition of  God Save the Queen just out of shot.

Before he decided to join in too.

And if your wondering how you can tell whether the party was a success? When the birthday boy comes home, flings his arms around you and declares it to be the 'best party ever'. That is until next year anyway!

Special thanks to Nana, Poppa, Jackie, Heidi and Nikki for helping make the day such a success too.

I'm shagged - who said weekends were for relaxing?

That's my word for the day. Shagged. It's not pretty but it's pretty apt.

I have absolutely nothing left in the tank. And tomorrow is going to be another massive day. So I will just have to will myself to wake up with fresh reserves from somewhere, and in the meantime reflect on the awesome-but-crazy that was today.

7.30am
I'm in the kitchen emptying the dishwasher and rack, giving kids breakfast and making a smoothie.

8am
I'm making my first coloured batch of yellow icing (I need to make 5 batches in different colours today!) for the Olympic Ring cupcakes for tomorrow's party. Mark walks down to the shop taking Noah on his scooter to get more milk for morning coffees - caffeine being an absolute necessity for the day that is to follow!

8.30am
I'm onto batch number 2 - red this time.

9am
Mark and Noah are out the door to football, I'm getting Mylo changed into his football gear and getting out of my PJ's ready to head out the door for a morning of football too.

9.30-10am
Nana, Poppa, Mylo and I watch half an hour of Noah's football down in Karori. Noah plays great, getting into his tackling and running with the ball - fantastic for Nana & Poppa to see him playing so confidently for their first time watching him.

10am
We leave Noah's football half way through so we can get to Happy Valley in time for Mylo's first Little Dribblers game of the season

10.30-11am
Mylo plays his little heart out, listens well to the coach and gets amongst it, spurred on by the knowledge his Nana and Poppa are cheering him on from the sidelines today.

11.30am
We arrive home - just in time to say bye to Mark and Noah who have been home from football, downed some lunch and are now going out to swimming lessons and to do the groceries.

I cook 3 eggs in toast with baked beans for lunch and then get back into the icing.

12-1pm
Batch 3 - green and Batch 4 - blue are cranked out. Then I run out of icing sugar.

1-1.30pm
I make a batch of ginger and cashew slice from The Petite Kitchen while waiting for my knight in shining armour to get home from the supermarket with more icing sugar. Nana, Poppa and Mylo play Junior Scrabble and Noah's new Doodle Dice game he got for his birthday.

1.30pm-2pm
I clean up the kitchen just in time for Mark to arrive home with the shopping. We discuss the fact the day has turned out much better than expected and decide to head for the hills. Well, to Zealandia anyway - as we've wanted to take Nana and Poppa here for ages - and as it's their only visit to Wellington this year we figure we'd better make the most of it.

3-5pm
We have a lovely time wandering the length and breadth of the amazing other world that is Zealandia. I am yet again blown away by the amazing bird song in the valley - it is never-ending, melodic, harmonic and complementary at the same time.

5-6pm
We arrive home - Mark whips up homemade burgers for dinner while I finally crack out the last batch of icing - black. I find myself sighing almost every 5 minutes by this point, I am bone tired and aching for a sit down. I spot the beginnings of a rainbow out the window and head upstairs to grab a pot-o-gold moment.

6-7pm
We eat and the boys have a quick bath, with the promise of a 'surprise' to come.

7-8pm
We head 15 minutes up the road to Newlands to watch the Petone Winter Carnival fireworks from a great vantage point. The highlight of the trip is Noah (who'd been trying to guess all afternoon what the 'surprise' was going to be) coming out with all sorts of crazy ideas as to what we might be doing. Just as we arrive at out destination, he figures it out - mainly cos he recognises the spot from when I took him here one other year to watch. I get the tripod set up to try and get some decent fireworks pics and snap away happily throughout. Mylo stands in awe holding Nana's hand speechless - he doesn't utter a word throughout the entire proceedings. I realise afterwards that this is his first ever time seeing a fireworks display.

8-9pm
We arrive home, tuck the boys in bed. I collapse on the couch and scull a glass of wine while I write this.

And with the big Olympic Games Party on, I'm not holding out any hope of any time spent with my feet up relaxing tomorrow either.

But hey I'm not complaining really. I know do it to myself, correction we do it to ourselves. But I'm not sorry that today we chose to suck the marrow out of each and every minute.

Am I utterly shagged and can barely see or think straight? Yuh-huh.

Was it worth it? You betcha.

Would I do it again? Ask me after 8 hours sleep and I might just say yes!

Things I'm Loving {This is your life kiddo}

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something you can be thankful for..no matter how simple it is.

I'm running with a different format for this week - and the Things I'm Loving the most are the celebrations of our big guy Noah turning 7, celebrating with a family birthday today and an Olympics Party with his mates on Sunday.

I started a wee tradition for last year's birthdays creating a movie of the memorable moments in each of our children's lives over their past year. It certainly is a beautiful way to remember them and to see how much they have grown.

Noah lost both his front teeth pretty much on his sixth birthday and had no front teeth for the next six months - it's such a cute and gawky stage to go through. He also had a run-in with the flying fox at school back in March and the scar is still visible now (but gradually fading). He also grew a crazy amount over the past year - about 9cm, and often gets mistaken for being in Year 3 instead of Year 2 he's so tall.

He loves his football and his grown a lot in his confidence in tackling and being more aggressive on the field. His reading has also come on in leaps and bounds, and he now enjoys reading chapter books - his favourite kind of book is about kids who are secret agents - which is why he has also loved watching all the Spy Kids movies lately.

Kind of heart and quick to say sorry when he is in the wrong as well as forgive others when they are, he is often complimented by other adults and parents about how nice he is to have around. And we think he is pretty darn cool to be around too!

Happy birthday to our gorgeous boy!
