Shakes and makes

You'd have to have been living under a rock (or maybe just not in NZ) to know Wellington has had a pretty shaky few days.

I'm pretty sure we all thought that the 6.5 earthquake last month was the only 'big' one we'd be getting for a while, and as expected the aftershocks dwindled away gradually getting smaller and few and far between. And life went back to normal.

So I don't think anyone was expecting what happened on Friday, I think it would be safe to safe it took everyone by surprise.

I'd left work at 2.15pm like any other Friday, after picking up Nikki from Life's Wonderful Happenings who was coming to stay the weekend with us. We had just come off the motorway, and were pulling away from the first set of traffic lights when all of sudden the back of the car skidded around and it felt like I  had a puncture. Now that I know that was when the 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit, I'm guessing the back wheel was actually spinning out as the wheel struggled to get any traction on the road as the ground rolled around us.

I pulled in and checked the car and was puzzled as to why there was no sign of a flat tyre. I told Nikki how weird it was, and she joked that maybe there'd been an earthquake - although neither of us thinking for a minute that was actually the case - and so we continued on our way to daycare. I also remember wondering why a whole bunch of people were milling around in the car-park across the road from daycare looking a bit bewildered, but it wasn't till we got upstairs and heard the news that everything then fell into place.

The cellphone networks were pretty jammed but Mark managed to get through to me and ask if we were OK. He was relieved to hear we were already at daycare, and sounded pretty shaken after being in his building on his own through the big jolt.

We left daycare at the usual time to head up to school, but people were already starting to flee the CBD (and it would get progressively worse over the next few hours). So the 5-7 minute journey took about twice as long and were late arriving to school, only managing to get there a few minutes after 3pm.

At this stage, the whole school (those who hadn't already been collected by their families) was sitting outside up on the top court. We quickly found Noah and then decided to retrieve his bag from his cloakroom before heading home. We were only inside the building for a minute or two (and also went into his classroom to retrieve a DVD) but in that time there was quite a nasty aftershock so we high-tailed it back out of the building. His whole school has been earthquake strengthened recently - which I am very relieved about - but even so his classroom this year - which is on the bottom of a 3-storey brick building - is not somewhere you'd want to be hanging around in on a day like this.

We arrived home and found a few things dislodged and fallen off shelves again like last time but thankfully nothing broken this time. After a strong and much needed cup of tea, the boys, Nikki and I played card games for the afternoon trying to take our minds of the frequent after shocks we were feeling as we sat in the lounge together.

Mark (who'd made the decision to leave work early and try and get the grocery shopping done) got stuck in the traffic gridlock that hit Wellington for several hours as everyone tried to get out of the city at the same time. It took him an hour to drive a short 1 km to the supermarket and even then he had to give up and walk the last bit. Luckily a New World worker took pity on him afterwards and helped him get the groceries back to the car, as his left arm - despite being out of his cast since Monday - yay for that - is still very weak and not up to carrying heavy shopping bags around.

There was another nasty 6.2 aftershock at about 5.30pm as I was cooking dinner which stopped us in our tracks and sent us for the doorway. I was very relieved to see Mark finally arrive home at about 5.45pm. As we sat down for dinner I realised I hadn't given a lot of thought to how the boys were coping with the events of the afternoon, but it came apparent - as Mylo refused to go to the toilet without me and Noah then acknowledged he really didn't want to sleep on his own - that the shaking had actually taken its toll.

We decided that the boys could bunk in with Nikki for the night (who was also actually pretty glad of the company too). I am so thankful there were no more big shakes in the night as our nerves were already pretty on edge.

Saturday passed by uneventfully until there was a decent 5.5 aftershock on Saturday night as Mark and I were watching telly which sent us for the doorway (me dragging a long thread from the ball of wool from my crochet like a tail behind me as I went) and then another smaller one in the middle of the night which woke us.

I'm feeling a bit helpless that this seems to have affected Noah particularly. He has seemed very subdued all weekend, and asked me during church if the ground was shaking - I said it was just the vibrations from the music. He also then asked after church if we'd been jumping around in creche as he said he'd felt the ground move next door - which we had - I'd had the kids all doingg froggy hyper hops around the room. He also didn't want to stay at church long after the service and even though he wouldn't really talk about it, I just know it's because of the quakes. It hurts seeing him full of fear - and I can still remember back to when he suffered anxiety for several months last year after accidentally getting locked in a toilet at a theatre during the school holiday programme. I really pray this is the last of the shaking so life can get back to normal and my wee guy can feel safe in his world again. I know even I have found myself imagining things moving when they are not, and feeling on edge at any vibrations, so I can only imagine how much more unsettling it is for the little ones.

Having Nikki with us for most of the weekend was a very pleasant distraction from all the goings on. She was subjected to playing just about every game we have in the house, and then had to put up with my kack-handedness, lack of skill and millions of dumb questions as she very patiently taught me the art of crochet which I've been wanting to learn for ages but haven't had the dedicated time to spend with a patient teacher to do so. It wasn't all a one-way street as I did help her get her Instagram feed working on her blog though!

My first crochet project taking shape - a hat

I even managed my first granny square - though I think it's pretty obvious which one belongs to the teacher and which one belongs to the student!

So, all in all a funny kind of weekend. One where simply being with friends, keeping routines and learning new skills seemed the best way to pass the time and prevent us from completely freaking ourselves out with 'what-if' thoughts.

And we are very much hoping and praying for a smoother less shaky week ahead.

Things I'm Loving 16.8.13

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something you can be thankful for..no matter how simple it is.

Karori Kids
This year Noah's football team missed their official photos as no-one could make the photo session on the day. Loving that one of the parents thought to get a candid version instead. Way more fun in my opinion!

Live at the bus stop
I love this gag - but even more so people's responses as well.

When blogging pays
So ya'll know we're heading off to the UK in less than 2 months. Inspired by a conversation I'd recently had with Vicki from Vegemitevix via Facebook, I decided to try my luck with approaching 3 of the tourist experiences we'll be visiting on our time away to see if we could possibly get any free or discounted tickets in return for a review of their establishment. I was honestly blown away by the response. One free ticket for each place would have been a pretty good result in my opinion, so when I got a response that we'd been given four free tickets for 2 out of the 3 places, I was pretty gobsmacked - $500 worth of tickets. Wow. Now the pressure is on to write good reviews though...eek!

The force is strong with this one
Loving that in the middle of some mega light saber battles I caught a very forceful look - Mylo putting on his best Jedi pose. Loving when weekends call for PJ's past 10am and no-one cares.

Conquering the monkey bars
Noah was most excited to show me how quickly he can make it to the top of the monkey bars these days. I was busy capturing his happiness when a little flash of red photo-bombed the picture. Mylo had a red dress up day at daycare for Heart Awareness week that day, and came home with his face painted AND fingernails too!

When things just go
Don't you love it when you buy an item (in this case those flowery pink pants) and you found you can make a whole outfit with what's already in the wardrobe - in this case a gorgeous necklace I was given by my old work colleagues as a farewell and a jacket that I've had for years. Result.

And then there was SILENCE
Hubby bought some noise cancelling headphones the other day. Not just any old headphones but Usain Bolt headphones - they do look a bit gangsta don't they! And the sound quality through them is immense. He tells me it's so he can enjoy our international flights all the more with good sound quality, I'm just hoping it's not because he's going to try and block out the sound of our children's requests!

Birdsong medley
Come to the gully Mum with me after school, says Noah. There's been kaka and tui there every day. We go and I admit thinking that we'll have to be lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I needn't have worried. We count four kaka and three tui in the fully-flowering kowhai tree in the five minutes we are there watching and listening.

It is a stunningly beautiful sound, isn't it?

Latest happenings...

So.......we had gained three kids to stay Saturday night while their mum and dad went away to Greytown for the night on the same deal that we did back in June (see here for our Once in a few thousand nights adventure). When we mentioned to them we were going away for the first time in 7 years without the kids, they said 'try 10 years then' as their oldest is 10, and they have 2 other kids who are Noah and Mylo's age. So when the same deal came up again on Treat Me, we told them to go for it and that we'd have their kids for the night.

The kids came laden with goodies including an amazing gluten free chocolate torte that their 10 year old had baked, and Noah and their middle boy went off to a birthday party for a couple of hours so we only had 3 kids to start with which eased us into it nicely.

We had some awesome fun playing Sleeping Queens and Doodle Dice before Giuseppe turned up to open his pizza kitchen and take orders for everyone's build-your-own pizzas.

Raspberry and lemonade fizz icecream in cones was served up for the second course before rounding off things with a banana, pineapple and marshmallow fondue.

And in other news...it looks like I might have (somewhat accidentally) volunteered my services as the new Treasurer on the Board of Trustees for our afterschool and holiday programme trust at school. And fingers crossed I may have managed to rope my great buddy Jackie in to do the accounts for it too! Which is kinda funny when I think back to my farewell speech for her when she left work a month before I did earlier this year, I said I sure hoped it wouldn't be the last time we worked together, and wouldn't it be funny if it came to pass again so soon.

This weekend, in between the fun and busyness I found myself taking a few quiet moments now and again to reflect on the blessings we have been given. It is all too easy to travel blindly and blithely through the days of our lives - with the repetitive monotony allowing the days to blur from one into the next without taking any time to stop and appreciate all the blessings in our lives. Love, family, health, friends, freedom, shelter. Take away any one of these things and there's a massive sense of loss. And I was reminded of that old hymn:

'Count your blessings
name them one by one'

Our blessings ARE many.

Many.

Things I'm Loving 9.8.13

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something you can be thankful for..no matter how simple it is.

Movie treats
I wasn't that fussed about going to see the first Despicable Me when it came out and begrudgingly watched it on DVD some time later, but at the time it surprised me how much I enjoyed the storyline and characters - especially sweet little Agnes - what's not to love?!

So when Despicable Me 2 came out, we scheduled in a special outing with our friends Jackie and Heidi.

We all loved it, although I was sure that after the massive frozen coke the boys shared they would need the loo halfway through but we made it to the end.

Just as much fun for them was mucking around in the games arcade afterward. I always plead destitution when it comes to the coins required and so far so good, I've managed to get away with it.

And my weird fascination with random Instagram shots of course meant I had to take a photo of the carpet and the side of Jackie's Chucks it would seem.

Memories of One Red Dog
We went out for a friend's birthday the other day, and I realised I haven't been to One Red Dog in years. It was actually the scene of Mark and my first date many many moons ago (try 15 years!). I recall going out for hot chocolates together, making them last for hours and hours as we got to know each other and drinking the yummy melon flavoured free water they had in jugs at the bar. Ah those sweet, young carefee days!

This chick
Let me introduce to one of my favourite people on the planet. You might already know her as thenikinator on Instagram or the lovely face behind Life's Wonderful Happenings. But to me she's also my sweet Nikki and she's back in NZ for a few weeks - whoop whoop. This was a friendship that might never have happened save for the fact that we have a shared interest in photography and she was Noah's teacher at daycare in the months before she left for her OE. So this was us catching up for a coffee in real life last week after 2.5 years away although there's been plenty of Skype chats during that time. She also came and hung out at Noah's party last weekend, we had sushi together this week, and next weekend she's coming to hang out at our house for a sleepover - and she's promised to teach me to finally crochet too - whoop whoop!

Signing in
This little guy is so into his letters and numbers right now. Loved watching him signing in at daycare last week. The only one I had to help with was the E, otherwise it was all his efforts.

Train in a tin
Loving this cute little mini train set that Noah got for his birthday - it reminds me so much of the train set my brothers had when they were young.

Mini pot-o-gold
Loving the skies over Wellington last weekend, and despite the fact the 2 ends of the rainbow never joined up, they were wonderfully intense at either end.

This sight
I already shared this one on Instagram earlier in the week. But you won't know the back story. So the short version is this: I'm out of bed at 5.30am getting ready for my morning walk. I come downstairs and hear Noah telling Mylo to hurry up and get off the toilet as he's busting to go too. Which would be fine except Mylo won't budge until someone has wiped his bottom. I came into the bathroom to do just that and burst out laughing to see this sight:

But what you don't know is that the night before the boys had been playing with some dive sticks in the bath, putting their goggles on and going underwater to pick up the sticks. This was a huge achievement for Mylo as it was the first time he'd officially put his head into the water and held his breath properly without choking on half the bath water. So we had given him heaps of praise, telling him what a great job he'd done.

So the goggles were duly placed lovingly on his bedside drawers before he went to bed, and obviously put on again the minute he got up in the morning, even before going about his toilet business! The last couple of nights he has also requested a bath 'on his own' so he can practice his underwater techniques. Bless!

Getting back to normal
Lastly, loving that hubby's work trip to Melbourne passed uneventfully last week and I hardly knew he was gone. That had a lot to do with all the help I had - Jackie and Heidi one night and Mum for 3 nights. He got home at midnight the night of Noah's actual birthday so was there when Noah woke up in the morning which was very important to our boy!

And we are also hopeful that Mark will finally get his cast off in the next few days - can I publicly acknowledge what a trooper my husband has been? Most of the time I've forgotten he's even got the cast on as he's just gone about his business uncomplaining and doing everything as per normal just with one arm - other than cutting onions which became my job - I usually avoid it like the plague as it makes my eyes water something terrible - but I did it for my love! It'll still be nice to have him back to full capacity and for cutting those pesky onions though!
