Why a LEGO Star Wars Game of course!
We received the Battle of Hoth game to review and I could barely contain myself when it arrived, but wisely hid it in the cupboard for a couple of nights as we were intending to wait and play it as a weekend-stay-up-late treat with Dad for Noah (aged 5 and a half).
The thing is...I did get the instructions out to have a look and left them lying around, and of course a pair of eagle eyes discovered said instructions and started to flip through the pages...saying 'oh cool Mum it's a book on LEGO Star Wars'. 'Aha Noah' said I 'not just a book, it's a game, doesn't it look cool, maybe we could get it and play it one day'. We played him along for a bit until we thought we'd better fess up and brought it out of the cupboard to a pair of extremely wide-eyes who thought all his Christmases had come at once!
The initial build of the game board and pieces was completed by Dad (himself a self-confessed LEGO Star Wars freak) which took about 30-45 minutes but would take a kid a bit longer. You could easily stretch out the build and play of the game over several fun sessions together.
We saved the game till after bath-time and then with a boy smelling all fresh and lovely in jammies, it was time to break out the fun.
The concept is simple enough. Take the goodies (Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance) and the baddies (Darth Vader and the Imperial Force) who will fight to take control of their enemy's base on the planet Hoth.
In each turn, you get two moves, which can be either a MOVE or an ATTACK. Different playing pieces have different attack ranges, some can move 1 space in any direction, others can move 2 spaces diagonally, and others the whole length of the board in a straight line vertically or horizontally all dependent on which piece you have in your hand. You also can't move or attack with the same piece twice in your turn which means you have to mix it up a bit.
If you choose to ATTACK, you roll the LEGO dice to determine whether your ATTACK misses or hits, and if you get a hit you get to remove a playing piece from the board - either a man inside a unit or if the men have all been killed, the unit itself then gets destroyed.
Luke Skywalker and Darth Varder as leaders of the opposing forces also have special powers so if they are on the attack and roll the Force symbol on the dice they can 'USE THE FORCE' and take out a whole unit in one ATTACK.
The game also has several variations where you can add extra players like Han Solo, Chewbacca and others into the mix. You can also build a different version of the board to make it more challenging as well.
Noah loved the game so much we played it again several times over the course of the weekend, and I can see as his chess skills develop (he's just started learning at school) his strategic ability will grow with the game over time. Even just using it as a LEGO set without actually playing the game, I saw how much he enjoyed simulating his own battles with all the LEGO pieces that come with the game.

What a cool looking game!
Fabulous action pics of a cool game! I've always liked Lego - from when I was a child - and the new 'Lego games' that are coming out are such a neat idea.
